Though rising in popularity in North America, dancing can be an intimidating hobby to get into. Understandably, a lot of people (both men and women) naturally don’t want to appear awkward or clumsy and don’t really want to have to take expensive (and potentially embarrassing) private or group lessons from a professional dance instructor with their husband, wife or significant other.
This is where a home-study course such as the Learn and Master Ballroom Dance package becomes such a valuable learning tool. Now, from the comfort and privacy of your own home you can easily learn all you need about 6 different dances and will actually prepare you for your first steps onto the dance floor at the next wedding, party, or other dancing event.
Your personal dance instructors, Jamiee Simon and Mark Short keep are exceptionally talented and accomplished with many decades of dancing experience between them. You can check out their impressive bios on their website. While professional, they still succeed in making the learning process engaging and a whole lot of fun. They are also very thorough in their demonstrations, which everyone who is new to dancing will greatly appreciate. There are few things as frustrating as instructors that fail to explain a topic adequately or just gloss over it completely.
The Learn and Master Ballroom Dance includes:
DVD Lessons: The bulk of the Learn and Master Ballroom Dance course is made up of the 20 dance sessions that are distributed amongst the 13 DVDs. Early sessions address the basics of partner dancing and lay the groundwork for the 6 different dancing styles that are taught in detail to follow. Each session introduces several new dance “figures” (dance moves or steps that make up a dance) and is taught from both the male and female’s role as well as together. Each dance style has a workshop that brings everything together and explains how to make the dance figures work together in real-world situations.
On the technical side of things, video and audio quality is quite good. The DVD footage looked substantially clearer on our DVD player than on our computer monitor however, though that may have been our test computer’s issue. Multiple camera angles are used, and split-screen technology is well-implemented at particular times to better show some of the footwork sequences.
Lesson Book: This well-illustrated 75-page book makes it easy to look up how to perform any particular dance figure and makes a really handy reference guide. It also features plenty of black & white photos that do a great job of showing the key elements of the dance figures. Many of the important ideas and dancing tips are also repeated here for your convenience.
If you want to give dancing a try, but don’t want to commit to private tutoring, you can’t make a better choice than Learn and Master Ballroom Dance.
Music CDs: We thought we were just getting a dance course. We didn't realize that Learn and Master Ballroom Dance includes 6 CDs of music to dance to in the various dance genres that are taught. All together you’ll get 78 songs which equates to 13 songs that go with each dance style (all with varied tempos). The tracks are performed with full instrumentation and sound quite good.
The lessons are designed so that the students learn the easier dances first such as the waltz and tango, and eventually work up to the more difficult ones, like the cha cha and the rumba.
Practice Tips: While all the dances covered in this course obviously require a partner to perform in real life, you don’t always have to have a partner while learning the moves and techniques. All male and female dance parts in every dance figure are separately demonstrated by Mark and Jamiee respectively. This is great as you won’t always have a dance partner readily available and this feature allows you keep learning at whatever pace you choose. What you will require however, is a bit of open space in front of your TV or computer screen. This won’t be a problem for many people, but if you live in a tiny apartment for example, you may want to rethink things a bit
