Guitar Lesson Reviews

Created by Chris Elmore of Emore Music, Guitar Tips is actually a single learning module part of the larger Speed Learning Guitar System (ranked lower in our top 10 list). Guitar Tips is downloadable multimedia computer guitar course. Most of the lessons are text-based, but there are lots of video and audio lessons and exercises sprinkled in throughout the course.

Some parts of the course lack in terms of quality while other sections are very well produced. For instance, some of the video lessons are in brilliantly filmed in HD, and then others look like they were shot using a 10-year old webcam. If Elmore Music revamped some of their content it would make them a serious competitor to Jamorama.

One thing that Guitar Tips has going for it? It’s cheap. If you aren’t quite sure that learning guitar is for you and don’t want to spend very much money on courses for an instrument you don’t necessarily want to learn, Guitar Tips is a small investment to lose.

Amazing Guitar Secrets is a value-priced DVD guitar lesson package created and self-produced by guitarist Dan Denley.  In addition to the 4-hour DVD set, Amazing Guitar Secrets includes both printed and digital versions of the accompanying workbooks and supplemental course content. More than most, this course focuses more on musical theory and some slightly more complicated guitar concepts. Certain musicians will definitely appreciate this approach and will benefit from it. There is also a jamming CD which while useful, only features a guitar and not a full band, which reduces the interest level somewhat.

Coming in at under $100, Amazing Guitar Secrets is a fairly affordable DVD guitar course. However, after our full review we realized that AGS doesn’t give you near the quantity or quality of guitar lessons as our top choice for DVD guitar lessons, Learn and Master Guitar. Mr. Denley is a good teacher, but sometimes the flow of the course just seems a bit unnatural.

Are you an ambitious wannabe musican that wants to try tackling both regular guitar and the bass guitar? If so, we’ve discovered a software program originating from Australia that attempts to do just that - Guitar and Bass.

You can either view the lessons online or by downloading them to your computer, though we had some difficulties trying do so with our test Windows Vista machine. Included are 50 interactive mini-lessons that each take on a different aspect of guitar playing. These lessons are neither comprehensive or detailed, but are a step in the right direction.

Sure, Guitar and Bass lacks a lot that better courses have, most notably in the area of video lessons, but if you just want to learn the bare bone basics of guitar (or bass guitar) Guitar and Bass can give you a decent introduction. Some of the lessons feature a virtual fretboard, accompanying audio tracks, and several video demonstrations.  You can see how their lessons work by visiting their website and click on “guitar demo” or “bass demo” on the left side of the screen.

The Speed Learning Guitar System was created by Elmore Music, yet another Australian music company that specializes in teaching guitar. Like the name implies, Speed Learning guitar is not just a single guitar course, but a “system” comprised of five guitar learning modules.  One of these modules is the previously reviewed Guitar Tips.

The Speed Guitar System is a guitar course you download to your computer and all told, weighs in at almost a full gigabyte of content! This course is big… Even with that being true however, we do have some things to say about the course. Read our entire review for more info.
